20 pounds, AND a year ancient.
Never switch before a year ancient.
my son outgrew his infant carrier carseat when he was 5-6 months ancient so i had to get him a convertible car seat and kept it rear facing until he was 1 year.
22 lbs for most rear-facing seats that are carriers. My seven-month-ancient is over 21 lbs and early to get too long for her carrier as well. We’re nearly getting ready to install a convertible carseat. These rear face up to 35 lbs, and then can be forward facing after they are a year ancient. Some even go further to convert into a booster seat once they are past the weight limit for a standard carseat.
Here’s a excellent deal I found that I’m considering the next time I get an Amazon gift certificate:

if its feet is out more than 2inches my brother had to get swiched at 6months just dont let it face the front till 1
You can switch to a rear facing convertible, versus the bucket kind that doubles as a carrier at any time.He is probably too huge for that kind. Your child can ride in a rear convertible at any time, he has to be a year to face forward.
All you have to do is check the specs on the car seat that you have. You must be able to look up the kind of car seat online on the producer’s website. It will have height/weight restrictions. If your son has outgrown his current one, then look for one that starts at the limits your son is currently at.
Ok – so does your carseat come out of your car? Like you can carry it nearly.. that is a carrier car seat and those normally go up to about 22lbs for weight limit..
So when your sons weight limit exceeds that or his height exceeds the seat then you need to switch to a CONVERTIBLE car seat.. These car seats stay in the car and can be rear facing or forward facing..
Your child must stay REAR FACING until 1 YEAR ANDDDDD 20LBS – Never sooner.
HE can stay rear facing in a convertible carseat..
Hope this helps.. please be 100% positive that is the right car seat and safe before you do anything.. most associates at a Babies R us Can help you.. You can even go to your fire department for FREE and they will place it in right and tell you if it is a excellent seat for your son
Best wishes
