I have that car and I have a Graco Snugride.
Did you have someone install it? It’s best to have your local fire dept. or highway make the rounds install it.. they place something underneath car seats.. they are called “noodles” and they are pink. They make the carseat recline so it’s safer and more comfortable for the baby.. and not as wobbly.
We have an Evenflo infant carseat that someone gave to us.. and it’s not wobbly at all. You can also take it in a car without the base. Excellent luck!
You can use pool noodles (cut) to place at the seat bight (where the seat meets the back). For an acceptable install you need to make sure there is less than one inch of movement at the belt path – where the seatbelt or LATCH strap goes through the seat. The other end is supposed to go – it’s called cocooning.
Come on over to car-seat.org and there are techs there who can help.
CarSeatData.org is a fantastic resource. You can look up your make, model, and year of car and it will list seats that are compatible with your car.

I reckon it is the only database of it’s kind.
First off, all infant car seats recline. Newborns MUST be at a 45 degree angle to prevent them from their head rolling forward and cutting off their airway. Once they have excellent head function, they can be made more upright, though not fully upright subdue. So that’s not an come forth.
As for trying specific seats – go to Babies R Us, they will let you try them out. Both a Britax Decathalon, Marathon, and Fisher Fee Safe Voyage Deluxe will work in a Passat, though really unless your newborn is reasonably long he won’t be huge enough for those yet. I would certainly try out an Evenflo Triumph Advance. Yes, it is a convertible car seat and not a carrier, but really it saves money and time in the long run. They outgrow carriers far too quickely. And the Triumph Advance fits newborns perfectly, but subdue fits in compact cars rear facing. Takes up less space than an infant carrier. And will hold your child a LOT longer. Goes up to 35lbs rear facing (VERY vital, since your baby needs to stay rear facing as long as possible, not jsut to the outdated ;20lbs/1year) and then to 50lbs forward facing. Its a cinch to install and use, too, and a real steal at $150 or less.
If you’re going to get a carrier, I would suggest using a locking clip with it, it can help keepit from riding up when you’re using a shoulder/lap belt to install the seat. Also, certainly call your police rank and question about car seats, they can tell you where you must go to have a CPST help you install your seats. There must be less than 1″ movement side to side at the belt path. As for securing the front part, the only seat on the market that can be secured (called tethered) rear facing is a Britax. Both Britax Roundabout, Marathon, Decathalon (which may really fit your child, try him in it), and Boulevard. Read the instructions for a how to or see the fantastic resource not more than.
